Predictors of Tooth Loss in Patients Wearing a Partial Removable Dental Prosthesis

Tooth loss is a major disability worldwide, commonly caused by caries, periodontal disease, and trauma.1–4 Partial removable dental prostheses (PRDPs) are used widely to replace missing teeth and are reported to have a high survival rate and a low rate of extraction of abutment teeth.5 However, PRDPs can disturb the ecology of the mouth and increase the incidence of caries and periodontal disease.6,7 Gonda et al found a significant association between tooth loss and several personal and biologic factors but concluded that use of a denture was the strongest predictor of tooth loss over 5 years.8
